Fossil shark tooth #2

This tooth is from the extinct Mackerel Shark Otodus obliquus, which lived between 60 million years ago and 45 million years ago. This shark had large teeth (up to 10cm high) with smooth cutting edges and large side cusps. 

Fossil teeth of this shark have been found around the world. This tooth is from Morocco and is approximately 65 million years old.

Sharks are great survivors and a very ancient group. They existed for at least two hundred million years before dinosaurs. Usually, the only parts of the shark to survive as fossils are its teeth, because shark skeletons are compose of cartilage, which is much softer than bone.
